Starting in 1878, the train journey from Kolkata to Siliguri was completed in two stages. The first stage covered a 185 km route from Kolkata Station (later renamed Sealdah) via the East Bengal State Railway to Damukdia Ghat, located on the southern bank of the Padma River.

Passengers then had to cross the river to reach Sarghat, where the second stage of the journey began. This stage involved a 336 km journey on the meter-gauge line of the North Bengal Railway, from Sarghat to Siliguri. Abdulpur Railway Station came into existence during this period.

The Kolkata–Siliguri main line was later upgraded to broad gauge in phases. During the construction of the Hardinge Bridge, which officially opened in 1915, the Shakole–Santahar section underwent conversion between 1910 and 1914. Abdulpur remains the largest railway station in Natore District.
