Bangladesh Railway Collects Over Tk 1.4 Million in Fines in a Single Day

Bangladesh Railway Collects Over Tk 1.4 Million in Fines in a Single Day. Traveling without a ticket is not only a legal offense but also a significant loss for national infrastructure. In a massive nationwide drive, Bangladesh Railway recently identified thousands of ticketless passengers, collecting over Tk 1.4 million in fares and fines within a single day.
This intensified monitoring signals a “zero-tolerance” approach by the authorities to ensure discipline and revenue growth in the country’s most popular transport sector.
Massive One-Day Operation
On Saturday, December 20, Bangladesh Railway deployed a large force of Ticket Examiners (TTEs) to conduct surprise raids across both the Western and Eastern zones. The results of the operation were shared via the railway’s official verified Facebook page.
- Total Trains Inspected: 159
- Total Passengers Penalized: 6,815
- Total Revenue Collected: Tk 1,436,155
Regional Performance: Western vs. Eastern Zones
The crackdown was strategically divided into the two main administrative regions of the railway.
1. Western Region Highlights
The Western Zone saw the highest number of detections. A total of 84 TTEs were on duty, inspecting 83 trains.
- Offenders identified: 4,060 passengers.
- Revenue Breakdown: Tk 5,55,515 in fares and Tk 2,43,965 in fines.
- Total Income: Tk 7,99,480.
2. Eastern Region Highlights
In the Eastern Zone, 102 TTEs inspected 76 trains to ensure compliance.
- Offenders identified: 2,755 passengers.
- Revenue Breakdown: Tk 4,42,880 in fares and Tk 1,93,795 in fines.
- Total Income: Tk 6,36,675.
Why Is Bangladesh Railway Increasing Raids?
The railway department is focusing on “leakage prevention.” When passengers travel without tickets, the government loses vital funds needed for railway maintenance, coach upgrades, and track safety.
Important Note: Under railway law, traveling without a ticket can result in a fine equal to the ticket price plus a penalty. In some cases, if a passenger refuses to pay, they may face detention or legal proceedings.
How to Avoid Fines and Travel Safely
To ensure a hassle-free journey, passengers are advised to:
- Book in Advance: Use the Bangladesh Railway official website or mobile app.
- Verify Tickets: Always carry a printed copy or a digital version of your ticket and a valid ID.
- Avoid Middlemen: Only purchase tickets from official counters or authorized platforms to avoid counterfeit tickets.
Conclusion
The collection of Tk 1.43 million in a single day serves as a wake-up call for commuters. Bangladesh Railway has confirmed that these surprise inspections will continue across all routes. For the sake of a comfortable and legal journey, always ensure you have a valid ticket before boarding.
