The Bangladesh government initiated a railway expansion from Dohazari in Chittagong to Gundum in Bandarban, aiming to connect with the trans-Asian railway network via the proposed Ghumdhum station. A separate line from Ramu to Cox’s Bazar was also planned to promote tourism. Construction began in August 2017.
The Cox’s Bazar station, designed by architect Mohammad Foyez Ullah, features an oyster-shaped exterior symbolizing the beach. On January 14, 2021, the foundation stone fell, marking a total cost of Tk 214 crore. They completed 45% of the work by January 2022 and reached 85% by March 2023.

The station terminal consists of five floors, with the top floor reserved for future use. The ground floor includes ticket counters, government services, shops, and other facilities.
